TOOWOOMBA’S TASTE OF THE GAMES
COMMUNITY RALLIES FOR RELAY
ALL eyes might be on the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony tonight, but Toowoomba had its own taste of the Games last week.
The Queen’s Baton Relay swept through the Garden City on Wednesday and shone a spotlight on our local heroes.
Civic Square played host to all the pageantry and excitement of the Relay after it made its way through the streets carried by 73 community members.
Glen Postle, grandson of famed Toowoomba sports legend Arthur “The Crimson Flash” Postle, proudly carried the Queen’s Baton through the guard of honour, accompanied by a traditional Aboriginal smoking ceremony to welcome the Queen’s Baton and its entourage.
The celebrations included local musicians who serenaded the crowd and there were plenty of games for families and locals to enjoy at the QSuper ‘Super Games’ activation.
As Official Supporter of the Queen’s Baton Relay, the QSuper Support team was on hand to chat to community members about superannuation, retirement and the importance of financial wellbeing.
The QSuper Wealth iQ mobile check was popular with Toowoomba residents keen to test their financial fitness, with the added bonus of going into the draw for a chance to win $10,000 for the region.
QSuper CEO Michael Pennisi attended the community celebration and was delighted to see the locals taking an interest in improving their finances.
“Self-awareness about money matters is really important for a secure retirement. It was great to see so many people keen to use the Wealth iQ check to understand their current situation, while also taking the chance to do something for their community.”
In the spirit of the community coming together, representatives from about 50 Murri peoples based in and around Toowoomba collaborated to present different Indigenous traditions to add to the celebrations.
The Queen’s Baton left Buckingham Palace more than a year ago now and will arrive in the Games arena tonight for the Opening Ceremony.
