Trainer under investigation
RACING: QRIC officials are awaiting the results of tests taken from seven Ben Currietrained horses and are also seeking CCTV footage before resuming an inquiry into alleged activities at the Toowoomba stable on Saturday morning.
The inquiry was opened after Queensland Racing Integrity Commission officials alleged to have witnessed “a stable employee acting suspiciously” at Currie’s stables.
The stable worker was interviewed by stewards before Saturday’s meeting, as were both Currie (pictured) and his father Mark.
The inquiry will resume when the results of saliva, urine and blood samples taken from seven horses are known, as well as tests taken from other items seized from the stable.
Integrity Commissioner Ross Barnett said there was “not sufficient evidence” to scratch the horses from Saturday’s meeting, where Currie trained a feature double.
“If subsequent inquiries determine there has been the administration of race-day treatment that contravenes the rules of racing, these horses may be subsequently disqualified,” Barnett said.
“This matter will be vigorously pursued to establish the facts of today’s alleged incident.”
Currie described the intense focus on his stables last week as “a witch hunt” and expects to be cleared of any wrongdoing.
Barnett said it was vital to get to the bottom of the allegations, regardless of which way the evidence pointed.
“It’s important for Mr Currie and for the industry that this issue gets resolved,” he said.
“We will spare no effort or resources in getting to the truth of this matter.”
