WHEN Warwick mother-of-seven Sharron DeCourcy started thinking about university she drew inspiration from her own mother.

“My mother was a mature-age student and had four children. She went to uni in her 40s and set an example to me that it could be done,” Mrs DeCourcy said.

After years of study, Mrs DeCourcy will celebrate the completion of her studies at a University of Southern Queensland graduation ceremony at Clive Berghofer Recreation Centre on Friday. In the crowd will be her biggest supporters, her children, as well as her mother who is flying in from New Zealand to see her walk across the platform and receive her testamur.

It has been a long but rewarding journey to get to this point after leaving school in Year 11.

“My children were getting older and I started thinking about what I should do for the rest of my life,” she said.

“I liked numbers and I liked the law so decided to enrol in the USQ Bachelor of Commerce with a double major in accounting and business law.”

The first step was completing USQ’s Tertiary Preparation Program.

“I did that online and thoroughly enjoyed it,” she said.

“It gave me the confidence and the courage to continue on.”

While completing her undergraduate studies last year, she secured full-time employment at Globe Accounting in Warwick.
