Mustangs produce miracle comeback

-

RUGBY LEAGUE: Down 34-4 after 31 minutes of play, nobody expected the Western Mustangs to get close to Burleigh, let alone produce one of the great rugby league comebacks.

It is exactly what the Mal Meninga Cup side did, running in six tries without response to complete the thrilling 39-34 win at the Beaudesert Kingfishers Junior Rugby League Club at the weekend.

The Bears were well on pace to beat the clock, as they racked up six tries in the space of the opening half hour, before Jordan Lipp crossed to give the Mustangs some hope heading into the sheds, trailing 34-10.

An incredible sequence of events struck from the 41st minute, as the Mustangs piled on four tries in the space of nine minutes to Lipp, Jake Simpkin, Connor Williams and Tom Davis, reducing the deficit to just two.

In the 59th minute, Simpkin brought up his double, and gave the Mustangs the most unlikeliest of leads, before a Lipp field goal sealed the victory in the concluding stages.

The win is the the second successive for the U18s, as they climb into eighth spot on the ladder.

The news wasn’t as great for the Hastings Deering Colts Mustangs side, as they suffered a heavy 46-0 defeat to Burleigh.

They found themselves down 20-0 at the main break, and were unable to stem the flow of points, leaving them in 14th spot on the ladder.

Both sides will be in action at Gold Park this Sunday when they take on the Souths Logan Magpies.
