Victories give Roar winning feeling

- — Phil Dillon

Brisbane Roar goalkeeper Jamie Young says the team’s decent run of form ahead of tomorrow night’s A-League final with Melbourne City will hold them in good stead at AAMI Park.

The Roar was beaten only once in the final six games of the regular season – a 3-0 away loss to Western Sydney.

A draw and four wins, including the 3-2 success over Perth Glory last week that allowed Brisbane to scrape into the finals at the expense of the Wanderers, means the Roar goes into tonight’s clash in Melbourne as one of the ALeague’s form teams.

Young, 32, sees that as a major plus against a team that is three places and eight points ahead of Brisbane in the final A-League standings.

“It’s one of those games where you have got to get a result,” Young said.

“There was a bit of confidence going into that game (against Perth Glory) because of the results we had had.

“We will be looking to springboard off that confidence.

“You come towards the end of the season and it all has an added bit of meaning to it. I think everyone is looking forward to this opportunity.”

The Roar and coach John Aloisi have had a lot of critics during the season, mostly for the number of players aged over 30 in the squad.

Though Young agreed some players might be motivated after being written off, he said there were other factors inspiring the side to become the first A-League outfit to win the grand final from outside the top two.

“I think 10 or 11 games ago we said we wanted to make the finals and we have certainly used that goal as a motivator,” he said.

“A lot of players have played around the world and have won things and have got promotions as well.

“That’s why we play the game, obviously to win, and I think that comes from our performances and I think if we play to our best then we are going to be a match for anybody.

“We have already done that and we have to believe we can do that again”.
