Big fines after breaching order

AN OAKEY MAN who fronted Toowoomba Magistrates Court after breaching his community service order has copped a scalding from the magistrate.

Mark Nathan Vlietstra appeared yesterday and pleaded guilty to the charge against him. He was originally placed on the order after being charged with possession of a dangerous drug.

Police allege the accused failed to complete his community service at the Jondaryan Woolshed in the required time after sustaining a back injury picking up rubbish at the site.

Vlietstra’s solicitor argued that his client would simply need more time than the average man to complete the hours and intended to do so.

After viewing files related to the case, Magistrate Catherine Pirie made a stern assessment of the facts before her.

“He was provided with over 20 opportunities to provide a medical certificate. Why should he get another six months,” she said. “What is the point?

“I count more then 20 times, almost 30 including phone calls and messages.

“I am not going to give you another opportunity to comply.”

Magistrate Pirie re-sentenced the accused on the original matter, fining him $250 for possession of a dangerous drug. Vlietstra was also fined $500 for breaching the community service order, with both convictions recorded.
