1861 - Explorers Burke, Wills and King stagger into their base camp at Cooper Creek upon their return from the Gulf of Carpentaria, and find it deserted.
1898 - The Spanish-American War began.
1918 - German fighter ace Manfred von Richthofen, The Red Baron, was shot down and killed during World War I. 1960 - Brasilia became the capital of Brazil.
