Construction starts on war memorial upgrade
THE Toowoomba Regional Council will start work on an upgrade to the Goombungee War Memorial on April 30 as part of construction currently under way on Mocatta St.
Parks and recreation services portfolio leader Cr Joe Ramia said the plans for the State Heritage listed War Memorial Precinct received extensive consultation with the community and key stakeholders, such as the RSL.
“Council supports the growth and continual improvement of our beautiful regional areas,” he said.
“The proposed works preserve the memorial’s historical significance, while enhancing the memorial setting and the immediate surrounds.
“The plan seeks to remove the garden bed and associated wall surrounding the memorial, which impedes views of the memorial and detracts from its appearance.”
Infrastructure committee chair and Deputy Mayor Carol Taylor said the Mocatta St works would complement the war memorial enhancements once completed.
“The road around the memorial is intended to be a ‘shared’ zone for small vehicle traffic only, and the memorial will be protected by a new outer kerb barrier with bollards,” she said.
“As part of the upgrade there will be traffic restrictions in place.
“Work will generally be carried out between 7am and 5pm, Monday to Friday, however some out-of-hours works may be required.”
Residents interested in viewing the master plan for the war memorial are welcome to head to the Goombungee Customer Service Centre to inspect it.
