Football teams to honour Anzac legend before FFA Cup match

-

FOOTBALL: Willowburn and USQ FC will create Football Queensland South West history today.

The Premier Men’s team will kick-off in the region’s first football match on Anzac Day – their round four FFA Cup game.

FQSW board member Snow Green has been hard at work over the past few days organising a fitting tribute to the Anzac legend.

“We want to make sure we honour the sacrifices, past and present, made by members of the armed forces,” Green said.

“Corporal Judy Jackson from the Harlaxton RSL sub branch will read the oath and The Last Post will be played.

“The Australian and New Zealand flags will also be present during the ceremony.”

Green said he was proud to be leading the organisation of the ceremony.

“The Anzac legacy has always been of interest to me – there is so much history there,” he said.

“We also have a lot of armed forces personnel in the league as well so we want to acknowledge them.”

The game itself should also be a great spectacle for football fans.

USQ and Willowburn have set the early pace in the Toowoomba Football with the Magpies only two losses of the season against USQ.

“I think it will be a very exciting match,” FQSW board member Janelle Sothman said.

“They’re the two top teams at the moment and have been playing very well.”

The winner of the match will face the South West Queensland Thunder.

GAME DAY: The Anzac Day ceremony will begin at about 1.40pm before the match kicks off at 2pm. The game will be played on Field 2 at West Wanderers, Hume St.
