Filly shows raw power in win

RACING: She’s raw and she’s green but supporters got a good look at her motor when Toowoomba filly Spirit’s Choice turned on the power for a sizzling Bunya Park victory on Saturday.

Spirit’s Choice ($2.30 ef) broke through for her first win at start number three for trainer Matt Kropp in the Warrego Water Handicap QTIS TwoYear-Old Handicap (1000m).

After mustering early speed from gate one, Spirit’s Choice took up the lead before skipping

away on straightening for apprentice Rebecca Goldsbury to score by 51⁄4 lengths in class record time.

Equal race favourite Top Luck was best of the rest with first-starter Takotsubo ($13) finishing three lengths back third.

Spirit’s Choice had been out of the placings in two runs after debuting at Doomben in December but Kropp was confident the Spirit Of Boom youngster had much more to offer.

“She has heaps of ability,”

Kropp said.

“But she’s still so green. “We hadn’t seen what we thought she was capable of at her first two race starts.

“She just needs race experience at this stage and we put the blinkers on her today.

“Even then she got a bit lost on the turn against the rail, but when Rebecca gave her a crack in the straight she put her mind on the job and really finished it off.

“If she pulls up well we’ll give her a couple more runs this time in.

“I’ve had a couple of placings with the Spirit Of Boom’s and it’s good to see this filly get another win on the board for him.”

Kropp completed a winning double on the card when Rosie Posie delivered her fan club a popular victory in the McInnes Wilson Lawyers Open Handicap (1400m).

With the aid of a skillful Goldsbury ride, Rosie Posie ($1.80 fav) unwound a strong finish at the top of the home straight to set up a half-length victory.

New South Wales visitor and runner-up Habsburg ($30) made Rosie Posie work hard for her win over the final 150m while Just As Loyal ($15) was 11⁄4 lengths back third.

The winning script fell perfectly into place for Toowoomba five-year-old Well Sighted ($4.60) who maintained his unbeaten Bunya Park record with a determined win in the Camm Agricultural Group Open Handicap (1000m).

Well Sighted found the line strongly for Skye Bogenhuber to down Klammer ($10) by 11⁄4 lengths with outsider Claragh ($26) a neck back third.

A protest lodged by Hannah English aboard Klammer alleging interference from Well Sighted at the 500m mark was dismissed.

“The race worked out perfectly for him,” said stable rep Leigh Sears, substituting for her husband Tony.

“He needs speed on his races to produce his best and he showed today what he can do when things pan out for him.
