Gold Coast edge out SWQ

-

FOOTBALL: In the past three weeks the SWQ Thunder men have shown they have spirit – all they need now is a positive result.

Facing Gold Coast United at home the Thunder matched and, at times, outclassed their opponents but their efforts were ultimately in vain.

The Thunder lost 4-2 during the passionate and physical encounter.

A terrible mix-up saw Tyler Wagstaffe open the scoring for United inside 10 minutes, but it was all Thunder after that.

Chris Hatfield finally converted the Thunder’s dominance into a goal, latching onto an excellent through ball before dinking his shot over the keeper in the 31st minute.

United were soon back in front though.

The Thunder were guilty of giving too much space to United’s Brandon Reeves whose finely struck shot from 35m out gave Jacob Sayle no chance.

Another mix-up early in the second half saw Lachlan Weier slide in unmarked to tap home United’s third goal from a corner.

Trailing 3-1, the Thunder lifted their game with Wade Hall capping off a wonderfully worked play to get his side within a goal.

A Gold Coast penalty, converted by Uryu Nagata, all but took the game away from the Thunder in the 62nd minute.

The Thunder refused to concede defeat in the last half hour, showing plenty of attacking threat, but were unable to find the back of the net.
