Club looks to raise roof funds for big project
BMX: Backing is being sought to fund an ambitious plan which could see Toowoomba emerge as a major national BMX centre.
The $2.6 million proposal put forward by Toowoomba BMX Club involves its current Captain Cook Reserve track and club facility being housed under a Sunsmart roof structure.
Australia at present has only two covered BMX tracks — both in Darwin — and the introduction of an all-weather racing facility to Toowoomba would potentially be the first on the Australian east coast.
Government, corporate, business and private funding is being sought for the venture offering the Toowoomba community a facility of national significance.
A covered track will provide a safe and efficient environment for general participants while allowing for advanced BMX programs in the city.
It is also expected to enhance Toowoomba’s ability to attract higher level competition, including state and national titles.
Toowoomba BMX Club media spokesperson David Budden said the state-of-theart project was a potential “game changer” not only for the city but the broader Queensland BMX community.
“The club wants to adopt an elite centre-of-excellence approach, similar to what other sports such as NRL, cricket and soccer do with their centres of excellence,” Budden said.
“This would make Toowoomba a regional training centre which would allow the club to bring kids in from regional areas to train here.
“That would be an important part of their progress into the Brisbane and coast competitions and then onto national level.
“Toowoomba is perfectly situated as a regional centre to provide a “feeder” stream to the National Training Centre in Brisbane.”
