SEVERAL people were arrested, but released with out charge, after a group of animal rights activists stormed the Beef City abattoir just outside of Toowoomba yesterday morning.

Brisbane Animal Save, who took part in the protest alongside Animal Liberation Queensland and Vegans of Toowoomba, spokeswoman Amanda Holly said she was relieved the protesters were released.

“We had a number of protesters that entered the facility, they were arrested shortly after but released without charge,” Ms Holly said.

“We’re not criminals, we are here to raise awareness, we are peaceful.

“We organised the action at Beef City in response to today being the first day of Beef Week.”

Several of the 100-strong crowd of protesters tried to enter the holding pens and tie themselves to fences, but were stopped by police.

A Queensland Police Service spokesman said police were on scene to keep the peace.

Following the activity at Beef City, protesters took to the streets in Toowoomba carrying signs with slogans such as love not livestock.

Vegans of Toowoomba spokeswoman Mo Orr said the march followed a screening last week of vegan documentary Dominion, which used undercover footage taken in Australian factory farms.

“It was to keep alive the message and the footage seen in Dominion,” Ms Orr said.
