Airport security ‘good’
WELLCAMP Airport will work with Federal Government airport regulators as increased security measures are rolled out in regional areas.
Treasurer Scott Morrison announced $50.1 million would be spent installing advanced security systems at 64 airports nationwide with a view of increasing passenger safety.
But which airports will receive funding and security equipment is yet to be revealed.
Wellcamp Airport general manager Sara Hales said the internationally capable airport west of Toowoomba supported any measures to increase passenger safety for air travellers.
She said the funding demonstrated the government’s support for airport travel.
“We think transport security is critical and fully support any measures to support security in Australia,” Ms Hales said.
“We really welcome the government’s support of regional airports (and) we will work closely with regulators.”
Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton in April approved Wellcamp Airport for its second international passenger flight which will take off on June 11 for New Zealand.
Budget documents stated the Federal Government will provide $193.6 million over four years for aviation security initiatives, described as important for regional tourism and economies.
