Housing estate planned
Diocese to split parcel into 135 lots
THE Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba has applied to Toowoomba Regional Council to turn 11.25 hectares of land on Hume Street, Middle Ridge, into a 135-lot housing estate.
According to a development application lodged with the council, the estate will be made up of 135 residential lots, ranging between 480 sq m and 1601 sq m.
The bulk of the lots will be made up of parcels between 480sq m and 549sq m in size.
The proposed estate will take up the balance of a roughly 16 ha lot, nearly a third of which is occupied by St Vincent’s Care Services Toowoomba.
Catholic Diocese of Toowoomba’s Tom Jolley said the church had owned the land for decades, and it would have been acquired for the construction of Lourdes Home for Aged - a facility no longer run by the diocese and now known as St Vincent’s Care Services Toowoomba.
“No one would have known what aged care was going to be like in 2018. The land is excess to our requirements and council have got it zoned for residential (land use)... so we’re going to put it on the market and sell it,” he said.
“I’m sure it’ll be a welcome addition to the housing market in Toowoomba.”
The estate will border Hume Street in the west, Spring Street in the south. The main road into the development will be via the existing signalised intersection on Hume Street, with further entrances planned for the northern end of the Hume Street frontage and an all-directions intersection proposed for the Spring Street frontage.
The development is subject to code assessment and council has asked for more information on the proposal.
