Rahila dedicated to empowering women
HARRISTOWN State High School student Rahila Abdul Hadi has been selected as Zonta Young Women in Public Affairs awardee for 2018.
Miss Abdul Hadi was presented with her award at the Zonta Club of Toowoomba’s Area changeover dinner.
An application has also been forwarded to represent the club in the Zonta District 22 level selection process.
The Young Women in Public Affairs Award recognises young women, aged 16-19, who demonstrate superior leadership skills and a commitment to public service and civic causes, and to encourage them to continue their participation in public and political life.
Miss Abdul Hadi is an active member of her school and the broader community.
She has been involved in Harmony Week, school and musical drama productions as well as the student representative council in Year 10.
She was part of Skake Fest Queensland, winning the Toowoomba Region award for costume design and was placed second in the state final.
In the community Miss Abdul Hadi has volunteered at Toowoomba’s Multi-Cultural Festival and was guest speaker at the National Interfaith Peace Conference as well as at other local organisational events.
She was invited along with eight other amazing artists to participate in showcasing Women at Work in the special Toowoomba project, Cultural Wall.
Miss Abdul Hadi has been in Toowoomba for four years. She was born in Pakistan and was a refugee after her family fled Afghanistan when the Taliban invaded.
In the 10 years as a refugee, she experienced war, discrimination, poverty and limited education.
During her time in her new country, she has displayed inspirational volunteer youth leadership and a genuine dedication to empowering young women worldwide.
She is a very proud and passionate citizen of the Toowoomba community.
