NRL pair to speak at lunch event

- GLEN MCCULLOUGH glenm@thechronicle.com.au

THEY are two of the NRL’s most high-profile and controversial faces, but how much do sport fans really know about Broncos coach Wayne Bennett and his Melbourne Storm counterpart Craig Bellamy?

Toowoomba and Darling Downs people have the chance to find out something they don’t know about the arch rivals, and friends when they feature at a sportsman’s lunch at Clifford Park on Friday, June 1.

Clifford Park chief operating officer and younger brother of Wayne, Bob Bennett, was instrumental in helping lure the pair to Toowoomba for their rare dual appearance.

“I got to know Craig back in 2000 when he was assisting Wayne with training at the Broncos and I was coaching PNG for a World Cup campaign,” Bennett said.

“Craig finished up coming with me to PNG for a month where we slummed it together and he still remembers it as one of the best time he ever had.

“He is a really decent bloke and the chance to get both him and Wayne together in Toowoomba in the middle of an NRL season is a great pick-up for our region.

“Wayne has a wicked, dry sense of humour and him and Craig are pretty good mates.

“There’s been a bit of paper talk about Craig taking over from Wayne at the Broncos and I’m sure he’ll give us a good insight into what’s behind that story when he speaks on the day.”
