Yardings reduced in SWQ

-

ROMA

THERE was a yarding of 3560 at Roma Store Sale, back 2334 on last week. The majority of the yarding were steers, with 1360 heifers and 538 cows on offer. Drought-affected South Australian cattle were presented, with opportunities for those with grass to capture a margin and some heading straight to feed. Naturally, quality was down with plain quality light weight cows to return to the paddock, however many pens offered were outstanding in quality.

A large sample of drought-affected yearling steers in the 200-280kg range topped at 318c to average 288c/kg. The top price for quality pens about 320kg was 320c/kg to feed. Drought-affected two-tooth yearling steers made to 242c to average 238c/kg. Yearling heifers made to 250c to average 217c/kg in the largest sample.

Grown steers made to a top of 254c and grown heifers made to 212c/kg. Bulls topped at 286c/kg for younger lines. Three-score cows made to 196c to average 161c/kg. Heavy cows to slaughter made to 205c to average 189c/kg and cows with calves at foot made $1030/unit.

WARWICK

NUMBERS increased by close to 500 head and overall quality was very mixed to be in line with the dry seasonal conditions. A fair panel of buyers covering all classes were present and operating. Prices tended to stabilise for stock meeting exact market specifications, however competition continues to be subdued on the lesser-quality lines. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 3c better and medium and heavy weights to feed averaged 6c/kg dearer. Yearling heifers also experienced some small improvements. Heavy grown steers and bullocks received only quality-related price changes, however cows were marginally dearer.

Vealer heifers mostly sold about the mid-230c range, with some to local butchers reaching 274.2c/kg. Light weight yearling steers returning to the paddock averaged 273c with some to 290c/kg. Medium weight yearling steers to feed mostly sold about 265c with some to 281.2c/kg. Heavy weight yearling steers to feed averaged 267c, with some better lines reaching 281c/kg. The largest number of light weight yearling heifers averaged in the early 230c/kg range. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed averaged 249c with some to 260.2c, while a small number to the trade made to 268.2c/kg.

Heavy grown steers to export slaughter averaged 264c and made to 272.2c, while a small selection of bullocks averaged 259.2c/kg, some returning $1983/head. Medium weight two-score cows averaged 157c and the best of the medium weights averaged 196c/kg. A small number of good heavy cows made to 210c to average 205c/kg. Heavy bulls made to 228.2c/kg.

DALBY

NUMBERS reduced by more than 2000 head to 3701 at Dalby. Similar to the previous week, cattle were drawn from a wide area, with 1100 from western New South Wales, 670 from far-western Queensland, and the remainder from the local supply area.

Yearling steers 280-330kg to feed improved in price, while medium and heavy weight yearling steers at the time of this report experienced very little change in price. Heavy grown setters and bullocks sold to firm demand for the quality penned.

Cows generally gained 2c to 4c and up to 7c/kg on the good heavy cows, with some of this improvement due to the high yielding cows from western New South Wales.

Yearling steers to feed in the 280-330kg range were up 13c, making 295.2c, with those in the 330-400kg range making from 253.2c to 286.2c/kg. Medium weight yearling heifers to feed made from 221.2c to 249.2c, averaging 243.3c/kg.

Grown steers in the 400-500kg range made from 178.2c to 259.2c, with grown heifers less than 540kg making 174.2c to 190.2c/kg.

Medium weight cows sold from 156.2c to 186.2c, with heavy weights making to 215.2c/kg. The best heavy weight bull made 233.2c/kg.
