Thunder the right fit for winger

FOOTBALL: Jess Fry has loved football for as long as she can remember.

She can’t single out exactly what is that attracts her to game but she loves it all the same.

“I guess I was a bit of tomboy when I was growing up,” Fry said.

“I was always playing sport – mum had me doing a lot of stuff as well but I pretty much dropped everything when I started playing soccer.”

Fry first played for St Alban’s as junior before moving to Willowburn after she finished school.

It was at the Magpies where she met friend and current SWQ Thunder women’s captain Mel Lloyd.

That friendship would eventually lead to Fry joining the Thunder.

“I played at Willowburn for about six years after I finished school. When I first met Mel she was playing for Willowburn after she had recovered from an injury.

“My first year with the Thunder was a shadow player – they had a lot of injuries so they got permission for me to join the team – I was playing for them and Willowburn.”

After that first experience the right winger knew the Thunder was where she wanted to be.

“I really love the club,” she said.

“We’re not just a bunch of girls who play together – we’re like family.”

Fry doesn’t see herself ending her time with the Thunder any time soon either.

“I really love the challenge playing in the NPLW presents,” she said.

“And to said to Scott (women’s coach Scott Teakle) a little while ago that I’m really enjoying it because I’m still learning something all the time and getting better as a footballer.

“I think I’ll be one of those girls who just keeps playing as long as there is a comp I can play in.”

GAME DAY: Both the men’s and women’s senior are on the road this weekend. The Thunder men have flown north to face Cairns at Barlow Park – kick off is 6.30pm today. The Thunder have a shorter trip to face The Gap FC at Walton Bridge Reserve from 3pm today.
