‘‘ I MADE THE DRESS WHEN I WAS ON A SINGLE MUM BENEFIT BACK IN 1993. IT TOOK ME JUST OVER A YEAR-AND-A-HALF TO MAKE IT.

SAM HARRISON

A WOMAN is desperately trying to track down a hand-made wedding dress, sold to a Toowoomba store more than 20 years ago.

Sam Harrison created the dupion silk dress, with a vintage lace triangle panel in the train, using an old machine she bought from Lifeline in the 1990s.

“I made the dress when I was on a single mum benefit back in 1993. It took me just over a year and a half to make it,” Ms Harrison said.

“Unfortunately, just as I finished making it I got into a rather unkind relationship and had to sell the dress to fund a safe home for myself and my two kids.

“It absolutely broke my heart but it was the only thing I had of value at the time.”

Ms Harrison sold the dress to a second-hand shop in the Bell Street Mall in 1995.

Since then Ms Harrison has moved from Toowoomba to Ipswich where she started a charity store that collects donated formal wear and items for students who may not be able to afford to attend.

“That got me thinking more about it (the dress) over the last year and I have often wondered who bought it,” she said.

“Whether it gave them the joy I would have had if I got to wear it, and hopefully be able to have it back.”

Ms Harrison said she had always hoped to hand the dress down to her children, 25-yearold son Jesse and 15-year-old daughter Chloe.

“To get it back to pass down would be incredible,” she said.
