SUPERBOWL DUO IN MEDAL STRIKE

Toowoomba juniors shine

-

TENPIN: Seventeen-year-old Nicole Caldwell has already tasted her share of bowling success and is destined to enjoy plenty more, but her experience at the 2018 Junior Tenpin Nationals will be hard to top.

Caldwell and fellow Toowoomba tenpin bowler Cameron Stein were two of Queensland’s shining lights in the 10day Melbourne tournament.

Caldwell finished runner-up in the girl’s Australian Junior Tenpin Classic Cup while Stein won the boy’s Classic Cup.

Sixteen-year-old Stein was also a member of the South Queensland boy’s under-18 team which won gold in the Junior Boy’s President’s Shield.

“It’s good to compete so well at that level and is a good confidence booster,” Stein said.

The Toowoomba pair was also a part of the South Queensland team which finished third in the President’s Shield Combined Teams event.

Caldwell’s medal-winning performances were capped by a personal best score and the honour of captaining the South Queensland President’s Shield Girl’s Team in what will be her final appearance at the tournament.

Her personal best score of 277 was the highest for either males or females at the event.

“I was really happy with how we bowled and our results,” Caldwell said.

“To be also named the girl’s team captain this year was an exciting honour and a really big achievement for me.

“Playing youth tournaments next year is my goal now but this year we still have the Queensland Junior Cup coming up in July at Caboolture where I hope to also do well.

“I’m also hoping our Toowoomba girl’s team can go back-to-back in the Ken Mills Cup after we won it last year.”

Caldwell also finished sixth in the Australian Junior Masters.

Stein’s Melbourne success adds to his growing list of achievements sand CV.

He is the youngest member yet of the Toowoomba open men’s team after finishing second to gain automatic selection in the seven-man squad.

The Highfields’ student recently scored a personal best 279 playing in the weekly league at Sunset Superbowl.

Other personal highlights include winning through to the finals of the 17th under 21 MILO International Junior All Stars in Malaysia which attracts more than 700 participants from more than 15 countries.
