Classic film back on the big screen
USQ Artsworx latest Friday at the Flicks is the classic Out of Africa on Friday at 6.30pm.
Loosely based on the life of Karen Blixen, this film is an epic romance set amongst the glorious African landscape.
It is the film that cemented Meryl Streep’s status as a Hollywood Superstar, with one critic describing her performance as ‘the highest level of acting in film today.’
Boasting seven academy awards, including Best Picture, the film plays out in 20th-century colonial Kenya, where a Danish baroness, trapped in a marriage of convenience, has a passionate love affair with a big-game hunter.
Streep wasn’t the first pick to play the lead role of Karen Blixen, the roll was originally offered to Audrey Hepburn as the director didn’t think Streep was ‘sexy’ enough.
Friday at the Flicks is USQ Artsworx’ annual movie program, that screens classic, significant and challenging films.
A five-minute pre-screening talk sets the context and then post-show drinks and nibbles allow for a discussion with a community of film enthusiasts.
The film series offers a friendly group environment where film lovers can talk about the movie, over wine and canapés, pre and post movie.
Tickets cost just $15 general admission, $12 for members.
