Marl’s marvellous mob

Cancer Council Queensland fund raiser a Pomfrett family affair

FOR the Pomfrett family, this weekend’s Relay for Life really is a family affair.

About 15 members of the family aged between four and 50 will don the joggers for the annual fundraiser for Cancer Council Queensland.

The Pomfrett family enters the relay in honour of parents Marlynne Pomfrett who passed away in 1996 and dad Glen Pomfrett who died in October 2016.

“We’re called ‘Marl’s Marvellous Mob’,” Karen Pomfrett explained.

“We entered under that name some years ago but we didn’t do it last year as it was a bit emotional after Dad’s passing.”

The Relay for Life is a walk, jog, run through Queens Park which is conducted over 18 hours from 2pm on Saturday.

This year the relay takes the theme “Wizard of Oz” and many of the 1500 or so expected to participate will don themed costume.

At least one member of the team has to be on the track with the team baton at any given time while the others can rest, cheer from the sidelines or even grab a few seconds of shut-eye between jogs.

“It’s amazing how quickly the time goes by,” Chris Pomfrett said.

“They have food vans and tea and coffee on offer to have in between stints on the track.”

To register a team, volunteer or find out more about this weekend’s event visit www.relayforlife.org.au or phone the fundraising hotline on 1300 65 65 85.

On the day registration is $40 per person.
