AFTER their Interbreed Champion of Champions win at Beef Australia 2018, the Skene family took home more than just a trophy.

“Our exposure has exploded,” Meldon Park Simmentals owner Elisabeth Skene said.

“The day after our win we had people come to our site and look at our cattle and to talk to us about them, which was great to see.”

However, she said the winning bull, Meldon Park Major Player, wasn’t getting any special treatment.

“He is back in the paddock with the rest of the cattle, like he was before,” Mrs Skene said.

The stud placed second in the same event at Beef Australia 2015.

“A win at an event like that at Beef Australia is something you aim for when you show cattle and we’ve achieved it and that meant a lot to us,” Mrs Skene said.

She said the win felt surreal.

“On the night there were a lot of emotions and it was quite unbelievable because we’ve been working so hard. To be recognised in that way... that hard work has paid off,” Mrs Skene said.

“We’ve been showing the cattle for the last 27 years, and have won competitions in Brisbane and Sydney, but this is definitely our most memorable, without a doubt.”

Now home and back to reality at Meldon Park Simmentals at Cecil Plains near Toowoomba, it’s business as usual.

“We had a really good trip home and it felt even better after winning,” Mrs Skene said.

“Our trophy is sitting in our special trophy cabinet.”

With Beef Australia now behind them, the Skene family has the Ekka and Moura Show to look forward to next.
