Garden City players in demand for new comp
TOUCH FOOTBALL: You’d be forgiven for thinking the new NRL Touch Premiership was one of Toowoomba’s own.
An incredible 13 Toowoomba Touch players will line up for the three Queenslandbased teams in the inaugural competition which has started over the weekend.
Toowoomba Touch president Kevin Mitchell said having so many locals lining up on
It’s like any sport on television, once it’s on, they get to watch it and get the bug to play it,” Mitchell said.
“They realise the opportunities are out there now.
“We’re obviously proud. It shows over the past couple of years our local association is going strong in producing these players.
“We’ve got over 180 junior teams participating now, and it gives them an opportunity with the NRL Touch Premiership.”
With a number of players still playing on a Saturday during weekly fixtures, Mitchell said it would provide a huge inspiration for teammates and opponents alike.
“It gives them a big boost to play alongside with and against the likes of Georgina Rackemann,” he said.
“Once junior players see them, it sort of inspires them to try and achieve and get onto the big stage.
“When they are playing at Suncorp Stadium, it just shows how our sport is going. It has gone ahead in leaps and bounds since they amalgamated with the NRL side of things.”
The North Queensland vs Gold Coast Titans fixtures will serve as a curtain raiser to the NRL fixture, and will be broadcast on Fox Sports tomorrow at 10.45am.
