Accused denied bail after supermarket incident

-

BRAVE members of the public subdued an armed robber who threatened a 16-year-old female cashier with a knife on Friday afternoon, Toowoomba Magistrates Court heard.

Sean Andrew Remeeus appeared in the dock on Saturday morning facing one count of attempted armed robbery while armed after the incident at the Drayton Woolworths.

CCTV footage of the terrifying ordeal was played in court, where Remeeus was allegedly shown being bundled by shoppers who stepped in before police arrived to arrest the 22-year-old Drayton man.

Remeeus’ solicitor Nathan Bouchier applied for bail on behalf of his client, but Magistrate Catherine Pirie was stern in her refusal.

Police prosecutor Tim Hutton argued the alleged offence occurred in front of women and children who were going about their grocery shopping.

“There are expectations of the community at hand as there were a lot of witnesses to the event and there is public interest into what happens and whether he is held to account,” he said.

“There is a 16-year-old victim who is absolutely devastated, beside herself and too scared to go back to work.”

Mr Bouchier conceded to the court that his client’s actions were “amateurish” and a “spur of the moment offence”.

Remeeus was denied bail and remanded in custody to reappear in the same court on June 5. He was not required to enter a plea.
