Warm welcome in Garden City for Bikes4Burns riders

-

TOOWOOMBA firefighters Stewart Lange and Graham Horchner have made a triumphant, if not temporary, return to the Garden City on the mammoth Bikes4Burns charity ride.

The cyclists were among 45 riders that wound their way through the city in the third stop on the 750km Scenic Rim Ride, raising funds for the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital burns research ward.

The crew has tackled 350km and, after a rest in Toowoomba, will today set off for Blackbutt on the next leg.

“It’s been a great ride so far with fantastic weather,” Mr Lange said.

“And the people we meet along the way have been really good, looking after us and support crews have done a fantastic job.”

The Bikes 4 Burns cycling contingent, made up of Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, Queensland Ambulance, Queensland Police and SES, is tackling a gruelling 750km ride from Southport to the Lady Cilento Children’s Hospital.

Ride organiser Gordon Hemphrey said the first three days had been tough but the crew was inspired to go on for the good cause.

“It’s all about raising money for the children’s hospital, its what we’re about,” he said.

“I think we’re sitting well over $50,000 (raised) and hopefully we’ll be up around $70,000 by the time the ride is finished.”
