Why tradie David has heart of gold

TOOWOOMBA’S David Collins just might be the tradie of the year.

Two weeks ago Nat and Tiff Spary from Base Services rented a Ruthven St store as a permanent home for 2nd Shot, a social enterprise business helping people facing difficult circumstances. It started in February last year, from a van.

Mr Spary contacted Mr Collins, from Prestige Patios and Outdoors, to create a patio as part of the vision to fully renovate the old building and make a seating area.

“I knew David and I gave him a call and I asked him to give us a quote on this,” Mr Spary said.

“We are renting this space and showed him what I wanted to do, but I also shared our vision of helping, training and employing homeless people.”

Mr Spary was overwhelmed when Mr Collins offered to not only do the patio for free, but the entire renovation which the Spary’s had estimated to be more than $30,000. They had planned to fundraise.

“He’s definitely the tradie of the year,” he said.

Mr Collins is humble about his kind gesture and just wants to lend a hand, to help those who really need it.

“I go to work pretty early in the morning and one day I was heading to work and there was a guy pushing a shopping trolley who was homeless and he had a kid with him,” Mr Collins said.

“He was only like eight or nine years old and I was a bit shattered.

“It was the first time I realised that it’s an issue. That is when I reached out to try and help Nat.”

Mr Collins expects the work to be finished in about a week, which included having to pull up rotten floor boards.

“We will reuse what we can and then just replace what we have to, to make it a nice cosy space in there,” he said.

“If people get behind Nat and Tiff that would be the best thing. The more people that get behind them, the more they can do what they do best, help people in the community.”

2nd Shot is currently serving up coffee at 488a Ruthven St, near Cotton On.
