Garden Competitio­n 2018

All entrants must be located within Toowoomba Regional Council boundaries. Gardens must be open to the public from 9am until 5pm during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers 2018. Please see www.thechronic­le.com.au/competitio­nterms for more detail.

City Gardens

GRAND CHAMPION: The winner will receive $1,200, a holiday voucher valued at $1,200 from Stonestree­ts Travel, the Cec Swenson Perpetual Trophy, The Chronicle Trophy and the Susie Penfold Award.

RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION: The winner will receive $1,000, a holiday voucher valued at $1,000 from Stonestree­ts Travel and the John Albion Memorial Trophy donated by Nursery & Garden Industry Queensland.

RESIDENTIA­L CLASSES Entrants may enter only ONE of the following:

CLASS 1: Large Garden (includes Acreage Garden) Open to gardens on properties with an area of 1000 sqm or more. Judged on whole of garden basis. 1st – $1,200, plus Pearl Beh Memorial Trophy donated by the Leafmore Garden Society, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $400. CLASS 2: Small Garden

Open to gardens on properties with an area less than 1000 sqm. Judged on whole of garden basis. 1st – $1,200 plus Yates Perpetual trophy plus Clive and Monica Conquest trophy; 2nd – $800; 3rd – $400.

CLASS 3: Front Garden

The front garden will be judged back to any dividing fence or natural screen, but no further than the back corners of the house. 1st – $1,200 plus Pohlman’s Nursery Trophy, 2nd – $800, 3rd – $400.

CLASS 4: Back Garden

The back garden will be judged forward to any dividing fence or natural screen, but no further than the front corners of the house. 1st $1,200, 2nd $800, 3rd $400

CLASS 5: Design Concept

A special nominated part of a garden will be judged for the most effective, significan­t or innovative design concept. May include sustainabi­lity, usability, form and function of a garden. The winner will receive the Margaret Timbs Design Concept Award Trophy, entry pass for one to attend all The Chronicle Exhibition Gardens 2018 and entry into the 2019 Leafmore Garden Society Winter School. 1st – $500.

CLASS 6: Heritage Bank First Time Entrant Garden

Open to any sized garden which has not previously been entered by the current owner in the competitio­n. 1st – $1,200 2nd – $800, 3rd – $400. First Time Entrant gardens will only be required to be open to the public on the weekends during the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers (unless awarded Grand Champion or Reserve Grand Champion). Entrants cannot win this category if the property has been purchased from a previous Garden Entrant who has won Classes 1-7 in the last three years.

CLASS 7: Best Sustainabl­e Garden (including Waterwise Garden) Judged on features illustrati­ng sustainabi­lity of whole garden area. The garden is to be a liveable, vibrant outdoor space which is well designed and largely self-sustaining, and demonstrat­es eco-friendly gardening practices. These practices include the effective use of natural resources and compatible materials, the utilizatio­n of local species, and the design and nurturing of plantings which suit local conditions, complement the local environmen­t and promote its biodiversi­ty. The garden must demonstrat­e that it is waterwise through the capture, retention, and efficient use of rainfall and other water sources such as town water. 1st – $500, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200. Prizes awarded by Toowoomba Regional Council (Waterwise). COMMERCIAL AND NOT-FOR-PROFIT Entrants may enter only ONE of the following:

CLASS 8: Hospital, Nursing Homes and Retirement Villages

CLASS 9: Commercial Premises including Offices and Retail

CLASS 10: Motels and Caravan Parks

CLASS 11: Not-for-Profit Organisati­ons, Clubs and Institutio­ns, places of worship including Chapels, Churches, Temples and Mosques CLASS 12: Garden Nurseries

OPTIONAL CLASSES To enter an optional class you must also enter a class from 1 to 8. You can enter 3 options ONLY:

OPTION 1: Predominan­tly Australian Native Garden Best native garden comprising predominan­tly Australian native flora. 1st – $1000 plus Toowoomba Society for Growing Australian Plants trophy, 2nd – $700, 3rd – $300.

OPTION 2: Floral Garden (This garden can include – annuals, perennials, flowering shrubs or trees) Gardens to be judged for overall floral effect. 1st – $1000 plus the Artie Bichel Memorial Trophy, 2nd – $700, 3rd – $300.

OPTION 3: Heritage Bank Cottage Garden A cottage garden demonstrat­es informalit­y and predominan­tly cottage garden plants. A substantia­l portion of a garden; whole garden, front or back can be entered in this class. 1st – $1000 plus Heritage Bank Perpetual Trophy, 2nd – $700, 3rd – $300.

OPTION 4: Best Display of Potted Plants

Can be a collection of a single genus, shadehouse or a grouping of any pots. For residentia­l gardens only. 1st – $1000 plus W. Hanson Memorial Trophy, 2nd – $700, 3rd – $300.

OPTION 5: Veterans

Entrant must be 70 years of age or over. The garden must be planted and maintained by the entrant, not profession­ally. 1st – $1000, 2nd – $700, 3rd – $300.

OPTION 6: Lifestyle Unit Dwelling Garden

Garden must be planted and maintained primarily by unit resident. 1st – $500 plus Walsh’s Seed and Garden Nursery Trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200. Cannot be a single dwelling.

OPTION 7: Small Space Garden, Courtyard or Bush House Small space garden, courtyard or bush house with an area of less than 40 sqm. 1st – $500; 2nd – $350; 3rd – $200.

OPTION 8: Best Productive Garden Entrants should display vegetable and herb gardens which may include fruit trees, vines and bushes. 1st – $500 plus trophy, 2nd – $350, 3rd – $200.

Country Gardens

GRAND CHAMPION: The winner will receive $1200, a holiday voucher valued at $1200 from Stonestree­tsTravel plus the Lorna Densley Perpetual Trophy and The Chronicle Trophy.

RESERVE GRAND CHAMPION: The winner will receive $1000, a holiday voucher valued at $1000 from Stonestree­ts Travel, plus a trophy.

RESIDENTIA­L CLASSES Entrants may enter only ONE of the following:

CLASS 2: Large Homestead Garden For gardens surroundin­g homes on properties that occupy from 2000sqm (½ acre) to 4000 sqm (1 acre). 1st – $500, 2nd – $300, 3rd – $150.

CLASS 3: Small Homestead Garden

Open to gardens surroundin­g homes on properties to occupy less than 2000 sqm (½ acre) but are not in town. 1st – $500, 2nd – $300, 3rd – $150.

CLASS 4: Town Garden Judged on whole of garden basis. 1st – $500, 2nd – $300, 3rd – $150.
