City chips in with dual Pennants wins
GOLF: City Golf Club has made it a double DDGA Pennants celebration with two victories in this year’s round of finals.
City made it two straight Division One wins following its success last year over Toowoomba Golf Club with a six-games-to-one home win over Goondiwindi on Sunday.
The City Seniors Division team also got its name on the honour board with a threegames-to-two victory over Toowoomba Golf Club at Middle Ridge.
City Division One captain Mat Chapman said a coming together of experience and youth paved the way for the club’s success.
The defending champions this year were without team stalwarts Nigel Weldon and Anthony Timms, but the club’s younger brigade — including 18-year-old Mitchell Fowler — helped ensure the trophy didn’t leave the City clubhouse.
“That’s two in a row for us now, but hats off to Goondiwindi as well,” Chapman said.
“Gundy has a lot of quality golfers out there and it was a great effort from them this year to keep two other great clubs out of the final.
“The format of the competition changed back this year.
“We were up against Ipswich, Middle Ridge and Goondiwindi in the home-and-away rounds and for us to win twice away from home is never easy to do and that’s what won us a place in the final
“It was a solid effort from all of our seven players throughout the competition.
“Golf is largely an individual game and it’s great having the opportunity in Pennants to experience a team environment where everyone contributes along the way.
“We had a few blokes missing this year and it was pleasing to see the young players step up so well.
“Mitchell Fowler has just turned 18 and it’s players like him who are the future of the competition for us.”
