YOUNG people will be recognised for their leadership through a new category at this year’s Business Excellence Awards.

The Toowoomba Chamber of Commerce announced the Young Leader of the Year award at yesterday’s launch.

This year’s new category is focused on the leadership work of people aged 18 to 35.

Chamber of Commerce chief executive officer Jo Sheppard said the young leader award was not just business focused.

“The Chamber of Commerce had been running a future leaders program for many years which had been about building the future leaders of our business community,” she said.

“But our future leaders advisory group came to chamber this year and said they would like us to include a category so we could have a young leader of the year.

“It’s about being involved, not just in the workplace but in the community and having a vision of what they’re trying to achieve.

“This award is about leadership not management.”

Last year’s Business Excellence Award winner Story Fresh manager director Geoffrey Story said the new category was very positive.

“You have to have young people to coming through any industry but they don’t tend to get a lot of recognition,” he said.

Nominations will open in June 18 with applications opening on July 16.

For more information phone the chamber on 4638 0400.
