A fantastic day in sport

YESTERDAY was absolutely fantastic for the Darling Downs sporting community.

It was a day of firsts and I don’t think they come much bigger or better than Will Power’s memorable win.

In the early hours of Monday morning the Toowoomba IndyCar ace raced away in the final four laps to claim his first ever Indianapolis 500 victory.

It might be just another race win to most people but for Will it’s a moment in time he will never forget.

I was lucky enough to speak to Will for all of two minutes yesterday and it was obvious how much the win meant to him.

I could hear the emotion in his voice and I could sense him stopping to compose himself before every answer.

It was the briefest interview I’ve done but I won’t forget it either.

On the other side of the coin yesterday we had the McCullough family who had their own reasons celebrate.

A delighted Graeme McCullough spoke to us about the joys of seeing his son Andrew named in the Queensland Maroons.

State of Origin might not have the drawing power of the IndyCar series but its fans are now less passionate.

Replacing legendary hooker Cameron Smith, McCullough has big shoes to fill but I’m sure he will up to the task.

I wonder now what the rest of the rest of the week has in store for us.
