Willowburn battle for draw

-

FOOTBALL: On any other night Willowburn would’ve been celebrating a win – but Saturday wasn’t their night.

Facing TFL Premier Men leaders USQ, the Magpies created a number of clear chances but were unable to convert, with the match ending in an 0-0 draw.

Willowburn striker Nick McGauley had the best opportunity of the match just 30 seconds into the second half.

Played into space by a crisp pass, McGauley was clean through on goal – his shot beating USQ goalkeeper Matt Eilers before hitting the post and rebounding out.

The shot was one of several created by the Magpies who lifted their intensity in the second half.

“We spoke at half time about being more aggressive going forward,” Willowburn’s Nathan Daly said.

“And we wanted to shut them down – stop the balls into the corner where they like to play and get in behind.”

Willowburn slightly shaded the possession in the second half but were left to rue their missed chances.

“It (a goal) would’ve changed how the game was played,” Daly said.

“I think it would be a bit different for Uni if they had to chance the game but unfortunately it didn’t work out tonight.”

Daly said there were plenty of positives to take away from the game with his side the first to take points of USQ this season.

“One key thing we wanted to work on was our transition into defence,” he said.

“And we wanted to watch their counter attacks and shut them down there which I think we did really well.

“It’s just unfortunate we didn’t finish off our chances.”

Eilers was a stand-out for USQ making a number of key saves.
