Support for those in need this winter

-

WEARING warm clothes and sleeping in a warm bed is something most of us take for granted, but charities are seeing a “significant rise” in the number of households requiring support this winter.

METRO Care is aiming to make a difference for those doing it tough, by asking the public to donate their quality winter clothes and blankets to the Winter Warmth Appeal.

The appeal is an initiative that allows community organisations to help individuals and families who may not be able to cope with the chilly Toowoomba winter on their own.

The appeal was launched this week at McGrath Estate Agents in Toowoomba as the team has opened its office to act as a collection centre, supporting the appeal.

McGrath principal Toby Sandell said his team wanted to make a difference for those in need of a helping hand.

“It’s a way for our team to give a little back,” he said.

METRO Care manager Matt Gregg said the need for support had risen significantly this year.

“This year has seen a peak in

requests for support for winter clothing and blankets from our partner organisations,” he said.

The Winter Warmth Appeal supports families via vouchers supplied to community groups who give them to clients who are the most in need.

“Once people have these vouchers, they are redeemable for items such as blanket,

jumpers, jackets and doonas at Metro Centre. They are for those people who experiencing household pressure and an increase in the cost of living,” Mr Gregg said.

Mr Gregg said anyone could make a difference, simply by donating items to the appeal.

“We are calling for donations of new or quality preloved

items that can be used to help families in need,” he said.

The appeal is running until June 8 and those wanting to donate items can drop them off at the following Toowoomba locations.
