Toowoomba boxer back before court today
TOOWOOMBA’S world champion boxer Damien Hooper will appear before Toowoomba Magistrates Court today having spent the weekend in the city’s watch house.
Hooper, 26, was arrested at a service station at the corner of Alderley and Ruthven Sts about 12.30pm on Friday.
He is accused of assaulting two police officers who arrested him on outstanding warThere rants for alleged breaches of his bail conditions.
Having spent the night in the watch house on Friday, he was not brought into court for the special Saturday morning sittings of the Toowoomba Magistrates Court.
Duty lawyer Jag MacDonald told the court Hooper would not be applying for bail at this stage and asked that the matter be adjourned to today so Hooper’s solicitor Brad Skuse (David Burns Lawyers) would have time to speak with his client.
being no application for bail, Magistrate Kay Ryan therefore remanded Hooper in custody for mention in the same court this morning.
Police had a warrant for Hooper’s arrest for allegedly breaching bail conditions as well as offences police claim he committed while on bail.
Police accuse the light heavyweight boxer of assaulting a police officer, who was called out to a report of a disturbance at the Blue Mountain Hotel in the early hours of May 19.
