FOOTBALL: Discipline and desire was the key to the SWQ Thunder’s record setting win at the weekend.

The NPL side recorded three straight wins for the first time in their history with a 2-1 defeat of Brisbane City on Saturday. City has now lost three of their last four games against the Thunder.

Travis Cooper and Lathan Dunn scored goals either side of half-time in the match.

Thunder assistant manager Kris Hemmerling said it was an exciting game of football.

“Both teams played good exciting football,” Hemmerling said.

“We both (Thunder and City) tried to control the ball and beat each other on the ground.

“It was a very even contest, but I think overall we were generally the better side.”

Hemmerling had high praise for his side after their record win.

“It was a very disciplined performance,” he said.

“They had the run of things in midfield but we shut them down when they attacked.

“We have a defensive structure we think can shut down most sides. But it’s important we stick to it.

“The team has been showing a lot of desire and discipline in their performances which is getting the results.”

Travis Cooper opened the scoring for the Thunder in the 33rd minute.

advancing keeper.

“It was a really well taken goal,” Hemmerling said.

“He saw the keeper coming off his line and chipped him.

“I’m really happy for Travis, he’s a great bloke and a very positive influence around the club.”

Honours were even in the 57th minute when an unmarked Owain Thomas scored with a diving header at the back post.

The Thunder were soon back in front though.

Brought on at half-time Lathan Dunn scored the Thunder’s winner in the 65th with a chipped shot of his own.

“Lathan did all the simple things right,” Hemmerling said.

“He had a great game and it was good to see him score a goal.
