Saints overcome the odds to record first win

-

AUSSIE RULES: South Burnett picked up a massive upset Westpac Cup victory at the weekend, toppling South Toowoomba 6.9 (45) to 3.5 (23).

The win was the Saints’ first of the season, and marks a staggering turnaround from when the sides last met, where the Bombers recorded a 105point win.

A third-quarter blitz sparked the Saints into action, as they turned a 10-point deficit into a 17-point lead.

Coach Daniel Trace said it was a great reward for the effort the team had been putting in.

“We’re still on a high. That’s the big feeling that come out of the day,” Trace said.

“Everything we worked on seemed to click. There wasn’t that much difference in the way we played. We hit the scoreboard when we had control.

“It was less of a boost and more of a realisation that we are no worse than last year as a team.

“We beat South Toowoomba for first time in our history in the finals last year.

“I was starting to have doubts about whether coaching was for me, but this reminded me what we do it for and what it’s all about.”

Erin Thompson-Mann had a pair of goals.
