RACING: Toowoomba jockey Skye Bogenhuber has the chance to claim her first Group 1 victory in her maiden start when she partners The Monstar in the Stradbroke Handicap (1350m) at Doomben on Saturday.

Still on a high after picking up her first career group-win aboard the seven-year-old gelding in last weekend’s Group 2 Moreton Cup over seven furlongs, Clifford Park’s five-time leading hoop is buzzed to have the opportunity to claim Queensland’s richest race ($1.5m).

The Monster fought doggedly to fend off serious challenges from Platinum Angel and Calanda, who both appeared to head the race leader in the straight, giving Bogenhuber the ultimate success in her first ride in group company.

“We got a really nice run mid-race. When we straightened I was a bit worried when Calanda moved up. It looked like he was clearly travelling better,” she said.

“He (The Monstar) hit usual flat spot, but he gets in a real dog fight. He got into his gears and powered to the line really strong.

“It has been my best achievement by far.

“I couldn’t believe it. I have to pinch myself as it is still sinking in. It’s very special.”

At yesterday’s barrier draw, The Monstar drew gate eight, however he could come in six with two emergencies drawn inside.

The gelding has had one previous start at 1350 metres when running second in the listed Civic Stakes at Rosehill back in July.

Bogenhuber said the distance shouldn’t be a problem as she aimed to continue her wonder week with the Brett Cavanough-trained galloper.

“We don’t have to lead but he will be forward especially around Doomben. I want to have him where he’s happy,” she said.

“Brett knows the horse well. I think he’ll run out the 1350 metres strong with the way he hit the line (at the Sunshine Coast).

“It’s my first group one ride and I was ecstatic when I found out.

“I was already floating on cloud nine from the win, and this has made it an exciting week. I’m really looking forward to it.”

The Monstar is rated as a $31 chance with Ladbrokes, with Champagne Cuddles the $4.50 favourite for the Stradbroke.

‘‘ I WAS ALREADY FLOATING ON CLOUD NINE FROM THE WIN, AND THIS HAS MADE IT AN EXCITING WEEK.
