Shields breaks lap record during impressive run

-

MOTORSPORT: Cameron Shields was in fine form at the weekend.

The Toowoomba teen extended his Australian Formula 3 Championship lead to 15 points on the back of a fast and consistent performance.

Shields qualified second at Warwick’s Morgan Park Raceway before claiming two seconds and a place from his three races.

“I’m really happy with how we went over the weekend,” Shields said.

“I think we just missed our window in qualifying but second was a good result.

“We thought Warwick might be our weaker track this year because we didn’t have the chance to do a lot of testing.”

A lack of track experience meant little in the opening race with Shields setting a Formula 3 lap record.

“It was a challenging weekend,” Shields said.

“We were right on the race in race one, setting the record and grabbing second.

“In race two we were doing really well before a safety car hurt our chances – it was a tough race – we started in the wet before the track dried up and the pace quickened.

“Race three was a really wet one and we grabbed first which was good.”

Shields finished the round in second overall, one point behind the winner.

“It would’ve been nice to get the overall win but second is good,” he said.

“The goal this year is to win the championship and this result helps – we’ve got a 15 point lead now.”
