Sport unites people from all walks of life

- WITH SPORTS EDITOR JASON GIBBS

EVERY morning I climb out of bed at 5.55am – five minutes after my alarm has gone off.

It gives me just enough time to get changed, find a piece of fruit and get to my gym on time, while still maximising the time spent in the warm, soft comforts of my bed.

Winters are always that little bit harder – the cold wind stings my cheeks and burns my lungs just little – but I push on.

I drive with the windows down – the fresh air sharpens my mind and I try to find something “cool and funky” to listen to.

Funnily enough a little Adele or some Darius Rucker does wonder for my mindset but I digress.

I love the short drive to my gym – it reminds me of why I love sport/fitness.

Despite the early-ish hour there’s plenty of activity.

I pass cyclists and runners – some serious, others enjoying the fresh air and good vibes.

Around Queens Park things get really interesting.

There’s always a PT class or two – bodies slipping in and out of focus among the early morning mist and changing light levels.

A little further on I pass the “Coffee Crew”. A bunch of oldschool blokes enjoying a wellearned coffee after their early morning session – you could set you watch by these blokes.

At the same time I hope I don’t see any of “my early crew” because that means we’re running today – I hate running.

I pass all manner of people in that short drive – everyone enjoying some “form of sport”.

It, sport/fitness, is the great equaliser.

Sport does not discriminate. Everyone can get involved no matter your race, sex or background.

It doesn’t matter who you are – you can get involved and your efforts will be rewarded.

It brings people together from all walks of life.

It enriches lives and energises people and that is never a bad thing.
