Curnow defends Carlton culture as Blues lose

- – Matt Balmer

CARLTON midfielder Ed Curnow has slammed comments made by former Blues player Rhys Palmer on social media.

Palmer hit out at the Blues during Saturday’s clash against Fremantle, not holding back his thoughts about his former club.

“Everyone talks about draft picks and developing youth, but no-one talks about culture,” tweeted Palmer, who played just one game during his one-year stint at the Blues after extended stints with Fremantle and GWS.

Curnow yesterday suggested that Palmer’s comments were best to be “ignored” with the former player lashing out at the struggling Blues.

“It just annoys me that that gets traction that comment,” Curnow said. “It’s just frustrating that Rhys feels like he has to make that comment and I think that only serves Rhys, so just ignore that.”

The Blues failed to kick a goal in the opening half of the match, booed off the ground by their fans – eventually losing by 57 points.

Having played 132 games in the navy blue, Curnow backed up the views presented by coach Brendon Bolton after the match.

“We talk about it as a club (our direction), the guys understand externally there is a message going out about how we are going about our rebuild,” Curnow said.

“We’ve had this high turnover at the football club in the last couple of years, but inside the club, the standards are extremely high.

“Bolts (Brendon Bolton) puts a lot of pressure on our leaders, every player at the club, to be a better player and to challenge each other and so that’s what it’s like at the club at Carlton.

“On top of that you’ve got the other coaches involved that are pushing the standards and so are the players.

“It’s hard to say that we’re not winning but the environment is strong during the week and we have strong relationships, so it’s just not going our way at the moment, but it will turn.”
