AUSTRALIA’S first new-look Subway store has opened at Toowoomba precinct The Intersection.

The store, billed as a Fresh Forward Subway, features a new look as well as new menu items including buffalo chicken, carved turkey and ham, a falafel sandwich, an ancient grain malted rye bread, feta cheese and sun-dried tomatoes.

In another Toowoomba first, residents will be able to get their sandwiches through a drive-through.

Mother and son franchisees Hazel and Mark Johnstone opened their first Subway store in Toowoomba on Margaret St in August 1994 and now operate nine stores across the Toowoomba region.

“We’ve worked hard over the last 18 months to open Australia’s first Fresh Forward Subway restaurant,” Mr Johnstone said.

“The new restaurant has also meant we have been able to hire more team members for the restaurant and also up-skill our existing team.

“(It) is the first of its kind in Australia and is part of the brand’s new global brand identity which will transform every aspect of the guest experience.

“Our new menu items are also really exciting and new for guests.”

Mr Johnstone said he was passionate about setting up the Australian-first restaurant design in Toowoomba, which also features barista-made coffee, digital displays and a new digital drink machine where customers can choose their drinks.

“(Across our stores) we employ 120 local team members, who are like family to us. We have whole families working with us – mothers, daughters, sisters and brothers,” he said.

The new-look Subway store at the Intersection on Ruthven St is now open.
