Brigade celebrates 50 years

Rural fire service hits milestone

WHEN the Withcott Rural Fire Brigade started all it had was a water tank on a trailer to fight fires.

Now 50 years on, the brigade is better equipped to serve the community.

The firefighters from the brigade feel proud as the brigade celebrates a milestone this year.

The brigade officially formed in October 1968. It served in major events such as the 2002 bushfires on the range and the 2011 floods.

Withcott firefighter Des Askin said the biggest challenge the brigade faced when it started was acquiring equipment.

“Initially when the fire brigade started they only had a trailer with a water tank on it, which was towed by the local tow truck driver,” Mr Askin said.

Withcott fire-fighter Dave Quade joined the brigade 39 years ago and also helped build the station in 1980.

Mr Quade said the station was crucial in the 2002 bushfires on the range.

“The station was the command centre during the fire,” Mr Quade said.

“There were vehicles were constantly in and out during the 10 day operation.

“It was exhausting. You would work all day at your job than come to the station to fight the fire in the night.”

The brigade has invited all members who have served to celebrate in October. Mr Quade said he looked forward to seeing everyone who had served.
