Brothers remain on right path

-

RUGBY LEAGUE: The road to prosperity in the TRL wasn’t always meant to be an easy one.

Coach Chris McEwan knows the position the Brothers club is in at the moment and there are still some tough times ahead.

But he is confident the young blood coming through will produce future results for the club.

“We work really hard as a group and we have been getting better as a group,” McEwan said.

“They have been doing a fantastic job to be competitive every week in the competition.

“It’s not a five-minute fix, it will take a number of years to re-build.

“Considering we were struggling to get numbers at the start with not a lot of depth and experience, they have done a good job against good sides.”

The young side will face a hungry Oakey side tonight at Glenholme Park, and McEwan is wary of the danger they possess.

“We’re going to be short of numbers. We have our hooker (Alex McErlean) away and one of our better front rowers Mitch Betros will be unavailable,” he said.

“When we lose two players it is massive to us, where it doesn’t make an impact to other teams.

“We were competitive against Oakey in the first game before they got away from us.

“They’ve picked up some new players, including Wally Pegler. He’s a very good player, and they’ve probably strengthened their right areas.

“We’ll do the best with the cattle we have.”

A shining light for Brothers has been the form of stand-in halfback Sam Betros, culminating in selection for the Clysdales U20s side.

“Sam is a fierce competitor and has been really good for us this year,” he said.

“He has taken a leadership role amongst the young blokes and is playing good footballer.

“Clydesdales selection is a good reward for Sam,

“He asked me about whether he should go, and I told him you should always take the chance at a higher level. You never know where it will take you.”
