Proud point in time for breeder

-

RACING: It’s enough to make any breeder a sense of pride.

Clear Mountain Fairview’s late broodmare Proud is set to have four progeny running around Queensland today, with Upstart Pride competing at Doomben, and Ruler’s Pride, Proud’s Sequel and Spirit’s Pride at Clifford Park this evening.

Principal Bob Frappell said it was a special moment for the breeding group.

“Proud has had 10 to race for 10 winners,” Frappell said.

“She means a lot to us. She died unfortunately a couple of years ago.

“We bred her from a mare we brought when we were first at Clear Mountains. We bought Jealous Monarch and bred out of her.

“Proud was her first foal for us, and when she didn’t make reserve we decided to race her.”

Frappell was full of praise for the two-time winner and her ability to produce at the breeding barn.

“She’d be one of the best broodmares to have stood in Queensland,” she said.

“She has been to a lot of different sires and produced winners by all of them.

“You wouldn’t have looked at her as a breeding type, but she was a terrific racing type.

“She was tall and lean, and that’s exactly what she throws.”

Upstart Pride will contest the UBET WJ Healy Stakes (1200m) as the six-year-old searches for career win number 11.

Allegiances will be tested in the Lysaght Roofing Class 1 Handicap (1110m) at Cliford Park this afternoon, with Spirit’s Pride and Proud’s Sequel entered.

The latter is trained by Frappell’s son Michael, and is looking to improve on a last-start third at the track.
