Stopover: 24 hours in Abu Dhabi

-

ABU Dhabi is emerging from the shadow of neighbouring Dubai, offering a smaller-scale, more intimate experience of the United Arab Emirates, of which it is the capital. Consider staying at the Hotel Novotel Abu Dhabi Al Bustan.

Spend the morning taking in the premier sights, including sensational Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque and the fascinating Falcon Hospital. Fish and date markets lie near the waterfront corniche, which provides a fine stroll with city skyline views.

Spend the afternoon exploring Abu Dhabi’s two islands, the centre of numerous megaprojects.

Saadiyat Island is the city’s cultural district in the making; its Manarat Al Saadiyat arts and culture centre has an interesting multi-media exhibit showing the scale of Abu Dhabi’s building projects.

Yas Island is for fun: splash about at Yas Waterworld or ride the world’s fastest rollercoaster at Ferrari World, a huge indoor amusement park with several new live shows.

Yas Mall has 370 shops, a 20screen cinema and family entertainment zone. Dine at glamorous new Burlesque Restaurant, for Mediterranean dishes and live entertainment.

Staying longer? Head to Abu Dhabi’s heritage heartland at Al Ain in the Hajjar Mountains, about 200km away. Explore old forts, heritage and history at Al Ain National Museum, the zoo and the recently renovated, family-friendly Hili Fun City theme park. More at escape.com.au
