Yukana community truly special

-

HOW often do you hear seniors saying they wished they had moved into care sooner?

For Yukana Private, this positive feedback is one of the most common that staff hear.

It’s a retirement village with a difference, or ‘something special’, that delights residents and their families and makes them feel secure and part of a community.

At Yukana, you can move in from 75 years of age and change your level of care as you need, right through to palliative care. There is no need to move from Yukana.

There are over 80 Independent Serviced Units available, where you can live comfortably in your own home and add services and assistance as you require.

Yukana also provides a Total Care Facility which includes palliative care and secure dementia care.

As well as having an emergency system and Care staff on-site 24/7, there are a plethora of activities for all residents — both inside and outside the community of Yukana.

Managing Director Brett Mullen recalls notes being left for one resident when the service team where trying to complete a requested maintenance job for their unit.

“When I saw them next and noted they weren’t home often, the response was ‘Brett, I don’t know how I ever found time to work!’,”.

“We encourage people to keep active in the local community of Toowoomba as well as in Yukana,” he said.

Community is another crucial element for residents at Yukana.

“It’s important for residents to be surrounded with people of similar interests, similar journeys, similar stories, who they can do life with,” Mr Mullen said.

“I noticed one resident, who usually ate in her own unit, coming up for meals at our restaurant more often,”.

“She said to me ‘Brett, I’ve been cooking for over 60 years — I’m done. Plus, the food and company is excellent.”

A dedicated lifestyle team organises games and social events such as monthly barbecues, activities, and outings. This is done in consultation with residents to make sure activities are age- and ability-appropriate.

“We do everything for them if they want it, — of course we encourage them to be active but understand a natural part of aging can make this difficult for them,” Mr Mullen said.

The staff at Yukana are also long-term, making it possible for them to build quality, genuine relationships with the residents.

“Care isn’t just about physical care, it’s also about their emotional and social care.”

“We all make an effort to know our residents, because to us, they are not a customer or a client or a number — they are people we care about this is our Yukana family,” Mr Mullen said.

Interested people are welcome to visit Yukana Private and have a look around for themselves.
