COMMUNITY DISPLAYS

-

IN THE two previous incarnations of our city library, there were regular displays of topical interest.

Armistice Day, the centenary of the cessation of World War I, November 11, 1918 is coming up, being of importance to a significant number of the community and our magnificent new regional library in a central location is still, as in the past 30 years to my knowledge, an ideal setting to focus, with artefacts, photos, and exhibits on this momentous world event.

Of course the library promotes the written word, but also there are the visual responses to the presentations of items.

Perhaps the our council and the architects and designers of our new library can determine where such displays of community interest can be located, if that activity is to be continued in our latest and new purpose built building.

The centenary of our own old bred icon Qantas comes up in 2020.

Qantas has a vital link to WWI as two of the three founders, Sir Hudson Fysh DFC, and Paul McGinness DFC, both landed at Gallipoli in 1915 as light horsemen, soon evolving into aviators.

There is enormous scope for eye catching displays of iconic events in our new library as visual displays of new books, randomly selected books, and promotions, jog the mind to search out what is not known, as “how do we know what we don’t know?” JOHN CHAPPELL, Toowoomba
