Amazing week shows both sides of sport

-

EVEN in my wildest dreams I don’t think I could’ve imagined a crazier week in sport than the one we’ve just had.

It started off with some thrilling highs and soul crushing lows in the World Cup and ended with that brawl in the Philippines.

Then there was Lebron James’ move to the Los Angeles Lakers and Wimbledon is now under-way as well.

What more could you ask for?

How about some crazy footage of a clearly disgruntled Carlos Gomez destroying a water cooler during a Major League Baseball game?

It’s the type of week when I could dedicate the centimetres in this column to anyone of the above mentioned incidents and be content.

But instead I’ll do my best to focus on the week as a whole.

The biggest thing I take away from this week is just how all encompassing sport can be.

In a few days we’ve seen sport at its best and worst.

The best: Football minnows Japan pushing the more fancied Belgium to the very brink of World Cup expulsion. And then despite losing with the last kick of the game they cleaned and left their dressing room absolutely spotless postmatch. And who would’ve picked Russia over Spain.

The worst: That brawl – it was an ugly incident that will haunt both teams and basketball for a long time.

The best: Lebron James shunning trying to build another super team in Cleveland in favour of reinvigorating one of world sports most famous teams.

The worst: Gomez destroying a water cooler (google it) after a run of the mill strikeout – calm it down bro.

All of this is exactly why I love sport.

The shock of seeing a top Wimbledon seed crash out can be offset by the joy of an underdog’s victory.

One brawl – while ugly now – may mean sanctions that will prevent such an incident in the future.

Results aside there’s a winner in every sporting outcome – you just need to look at things the right way.
