City Vinnies volunteers make couch

IT WAS months in the making, but volunteers at Vinnies Toowoomba finished designing and creating a denim couch just in time for Denim Month.

The second-hand store on the corner of Ruthven and Long Sts is taking part in the Vinnies Queensland Denim Competition.

All stores around Queensland are invited to take part in the competition, with each store tasked to make the best denim display possible.

The Toowoomba team designed and upholstered a denim lounge, which was led by Jean Turner and her daughter Jenny Voll.

Cathy Upton and Margaret Graham also helped, and the women spent months working on the project together, cutting up old denim jeans and jackets to create a brand new lounge.

They also created a number of denim handbags.

This is the second year of the competition and winners will be gifted $250 cash but Vinnies Toowoomba coordinator David Bramham said it was the recognition that was more important.

“The volunteers did an amazing job, the display looks fantastic,” he said.

“It would be great to win, but it’s the recognition for all their hard work that we’re after.”

If the Toowoomba store image generates the most “likes” on the Vinnies QLD Facebook page, it will be crowned the winner.

Residents have until Monday, July 23 to vote.

There is also a 50% off denim sale today at all Vinnies stores.
